General Safety Precautions
Lowell Makes General Woodshop Precautions and Protocols
1. Protect yourself. Always wear eye protection: either glasses, and/or shields. Protective eyewear must be certified to meet ANSI Z87.1. Personal eyewear must have polycarbonate lens in order to provide proper protection. Full face shields to be used when operating lathes.
2. Wear proper apparel. Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, neckties, jewelry or bracelets that can get caught in moving machinery. Open-toed shoes and sandals are prohibited in the shop. Long hair must be contained to avoid becoming entangled in equipment. Sleeves must either be buttoned at the cuff or rolled up above the elbow and loose clothing tucked in at the waist or wear an apron (tied behind).
3. Use safety guards. Whenever possible use the manufacturers provided safety guards. If a guard is to be disabled or inhibited to perform an operation, a Shop Captain must be consulted first.
4. Keep work areas clean. Remove scraps and non-essential materials from tables and work surfaces before, during and after performing procedures. Before leaving the shop, work surfaces and floors are to be swept and vacuumed. Vortex dust collection dust container to be checked and emptied if 2/3rds or more full.
5. Be attentive. Never operate tools and equipment under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. Many cold remedies can impair attention and good judgment. Be aware of the people around and do not create a distraction that may cause them harm.
6. Secure work. Use clamps or vise to hold work whenever practical. When using chisels you must clamp work to bench. Be sure tools are properly mounted to bench or tabletop.
7. Don’t over reach. Maintain proper footing, never reach across a piece of operation machinery.
8. Do not force tools and machine components. Don’t force tools to do more than its intended purpose.
9. Keep fingers and hands clear of sharp cutting edges. Do not wear gloves when operating machines, sanders, grinders, lathes, table saws, as they may draw the glove/hand into the operating machine.
10. Use dust collection systems. Dust collection system should always be operating when the machine is being used. Orbital sanders and hand held routers must have a vacuum cleaner attached. Before leaving the shop, check Vortex dust collector and Shopvac, clean if needed.
11. Report accidents. Both personal injury and machine breakage to be reported immediately to Shop Captain at [email protected]
