- There are many different types of clays and glazes. You can’t tell what something is by looking at it.
- If a mistake happens because the wrong clay or glaze is used, multiple people's art can be ruined.
- Supplies can be ruined if cross contaminated, and expensive equipment, such as kiln shelves and the kiln, can be ruined if someone's project blows up or melts in the kiln.
How do we prevent any of this from happening?
- We work with one clay type. Cone 6, we can get a white brown and porcelain in this cone 6 clay. It will be compatible with all the glaze, everything can be fired together, and if the clay gets mixed up it will still function
- Why cone 6? We chose cone 6 because it is a high/midfire clay, and will do the least damage on the kiln. Cone 10 uses too much energy; the extra hot firings wear our kilns quicker.
- Buy your clay through Lowell Makes. We will have boxes for purchase to ensure the proper clay body is being used. This also saves space for recycling clay because we only need 2 or 3 recycle bins instead for everyone's own clay type.
- One person is responsible for the firing of the studio's projects. This helps to organize a schedule. This will help to be most efficient with electricity, time, and space. If there is something special that needs to happen independently, we can schedule a time for that, but it should seldom happen.
Purchasing Clay
- All clay must be purchased through The Pottery Mill/Lowell Makes
- Clay cost about 25-27$ a bag. Porcelain is more expensive. Lowell Makes charges:
- $30/bag for white and brown clay
- $32/bag for porcelain
- $17/bag for recycled clay
Why the up charge? Where is this going?
- The extra 5$ per bag helped to covers extra firing costs (more bags of clay, more firing)
- Replaces consumable resources such as glazes, underglazes, waxes, sponges, buckets.
After I make my art where does it go?
- Everyone will have their own shelf, you keep you clay, tools, projects on that shelf
- When your project is ready to be fired. It will go on a green ware shelf. Projects will get loaded from this shelf in the order they were put on the shelf. Projects may be excluded if they are still too wet. Remember what you made, put a name on it because it looks very different when it comes out
- When your art comes out it will be placed on a bisque shelf. This shelf will also go in order oldest to newest. Oldest projects will be kept for 2 months
- You will glaze your work and it will be placed on a glazed shelf. This will also be loaded in order, however, if there is a smaller piece and room in the kiln, we will try to squeeze it in.
- When your projects are done they will be unloaded on to a finished work shelf (this may be nice to put upstairs/ display/ advertising) we will keep your work for 2 months.
