Welcome to the Lowell Makes Wiki,
Who we are, what we do, how to join - on a page.

Lowell Makes was founded in 2013 with a simple goal to create a space for makers of all kinds to pool resources and talent that builds a community that is greater than its constituent parts. We are constantly growing new and better ways to serve this goal. Lowell Makes is a membership‐driven collaborative makers space. Our space contains an extensive set of tools, machines, materials, computers, and other resources.

We have several departments that vary from 3D printing, beer making, machine prototyping, pottery making, bike repair, and more. We are a safe place where individuals can gain knowledge and practice new skills with state‐of‐the‐art technology, along with access to resources they may not otherwise have. We are a community of creative-minded people who make all kinds of things.

“Art is the Handmaid of Human Good” is both the City of Lowell’s motto, and a reminder of Lowell’s rich industrial and artistic history as our inspiration.

Governance

Lowell Makes is run by an Executive Committee and governed by an appointed Board of Directors, as defined by our Bylaws.

All members are expected to abide by the Rules & Policies listed here on the Wiki, as well as those posted within the work shops.

Committees

Lowell Makes has grown beyond the size where every member knows every other member. As such, we can no longer rely on face-to-face passing of information to govern the various shops within the space. Committees are an attempt at solving this challenge by both creating a uniform system of passing information. Committees can be standing and have defined scopes relating to the continued operation of Lowell Makes or can be created ad hoc and formed to achieve a specific goal or run a specific project.

The Space

Lowell Makes occupies 18,00 square feet inside a repurposed and rehabilitated mill building. We purchased the building in May 2020.
